What Surprised Me Most About My Legal Ops Client Base
Recently, I secured professional liability insurance for Ops in a Box, Legal Edition. As part of the application, the insurer asked for a demographic breakdown of my client base—prompting a closer look at data I hadn’t previously analyzed in depth.
Lens 1 - Industry. While legal operations functions are highly transferable across sectors, I hadn’t quantified where my clients sit. The results were striking: companies in industries where I’ve previously worked represent 86% of Ops in a Box clients, with the remaining 14% spanning industries outside my direct experience. A useful reminder that while legal ops is portable, domain familiarity plays a meaningful role.
Lens 2 - Geography. This was more familiar territory. Today, 98% of clients are based in the Americas—driven in part by Ops in a Box’s digital footprint across Shopify and LinkedIn. For both Ops in a Box and LinkedIn the top three countries are the United States, Canada, and Brazil (That said, for LinkedIn Asia may soon surpass the Americas). Similarly, Shopify traffic is 60% Americas-based though for Shopify other markets—including the UK and Australia—are showing strong engagement.
My focus now is on expanding globally alongside the evolution of legal operations. Today, English-language materials remain a constraint. But advances in AI-powered, real-time translation offer a clear path to removing that barrier—and to meeting legal teams where they are, in any market.
