Legal Ops Outlaw Moves - Bootstrapping

At CLOC Global Institute 2025, I had so much fun 🎸 discussing legal ops outlaw moves with Jeremiah Kincannon and Janessa Nelson, we could have gone into the wee hours if the cocktails 🍸 had not been served on another floor. The CLOCtalk team managing to edit our conversation down to 22 min. shows some serious editing skills. 🙏

As our fearless CLOC leader Jen McCarron so succinctly summarizes, "Flexibility, relationship building and taking calculated risks can transform legal ops from the inside out."

Key takeaways:

  1. Catch people doing the right thing and look for opportunities to showcase and build that across the organization.
  2. Look at the tools you already you have in house and see whether those can be applied to solve the problem before heading down the road of buying.
  3. Don't be afraid to trust your gut to take chances and ask forgiveness in situations where people don't have the experience or perspective to say yes comfortably.
  4. Seek like minds to join the mission.
  5. Listen don't leap to solutioning too quickly.

Mantra: I think flexibly. I am comfortable with the unknown. Let things develop and see what they grown into.

After thought: Since May growing experience with GenAI creates new opportunities for bootstrapping with less friction.
